Luck

It's my birthday today and as it's the 13th I wanted to write about luck. Whenever someone asks when my birthday is and I reply '13th January', the first reaction is generally 'ooh unlucky for some'.

What is luck? What does it mean to you? Are you a 'lucky' person?

It derives from superstition and religion, with good and bad fortune attributed to faith or superstition - an accident or chance caused by something out of someone's control.

I believe it's down to perception. Granted, there are things we can't always control, like the weather, the traffic, other people's emotions, the list goes on. But what we can control is how we respond and our perception. When it rains, do you moan about how awful the weather is or do you embrace the refreshing and cleansing water falling from the sky?  Do you smile, knowing that rain is good for the plants or that if it's raining there is more chance of a rainbow, or that the rain is washing troubles away?

In every situation, there are various ways to react and respond. If someone turns you down; after a job interview, a sales pitch, a book proposal or an invitation, do you mope and say to yourself 'poor me' or do you review, look to see what needs changing and how to improve and carry on?

When something unexpected happens, whether it be a job refusal or heavy traffic on the way home, stop, breathe, check the tension in the body, smile (this is important), and consider what opportunities the problem brings.

Luck can be a self fulfilling prophecy, 'I am a lucky person' said enough times affirms the belief into the sub-concsious mind. It is more common to hear 'I am really unlucky' or 'just my luck', why is that? What does that even mean?

Be aware of your reactions. Every difficulty is a blessing in disguise, sometimes the disguise is really thick and it seems as if it is too much, when it is, be grateful and know that every storm passes over and the sun shines through.

'Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.' John Wooden

Find that spark within you, joy, laughter, bliss, happiness
shine out to everyone
smile and share that beautiful smile with everyone you see and if there's no one around then just enjoy that smile!

  2. Hey Tanya,

Welcome to the world of blogging. I completely agree with all the things you've said. Thanks for reminding me to keep telling myself that I'm a lucky person. I keep forgetting to use positive affirmations. Have a great birthday.

    1. Love that lively picture of yours !

    7. Yes, numbers mean what we make them mean.

    13. Have a beautiful B'day and a lucky life.

    17. Don't worry about the numbering in this comment, any statistical formula in the sequence is purely coincidential !

  5. Tanya, I LOVE 13! My mom was born on the 13th. My childhood house number (and where my parents still live) was 5+0+8= 13!

At my first job, we were assigned random chairs, desks, and monitors; everyone else had thee different numbers; ALL of mine were 13!

When I bought a car, the final under-the-hood inspector wrote his number...13... on MANY parts under the hood.

To me, 13 always feels like a "thumbs up" from the universe, saying, "You're on track, kid!"

From Kathryn Kistner in Texas, who's now saying,
"Happy birthday, Tanya! A very perceptive post!"
